How many chances does one have to take advantage of a once in a lifetime opportunity? And what if that opportunity is to see ones favorite movie of all time on the big screen? With modern digital projectors, all one needs is their favorite movie on DVD or other digital media, hook it into the projector and BAM! Big screen experience.

But, what if that experience could be better… (more…)

I played magic: The Gathering every day for 2 years straight in middle school. Got back into it a few times since.

“Oh. You’re back into that again?”

How many times have you heard this in your life so far?

I’ve lost count at age 10. (more…)

3 years

*Note* The above image is suppose to say 2014 NOT 2013. Never blog while tired, kids!

When I realized that the 3 year anniversary of The Uncommon Geek was a few months away, at first I got excited! I was thinking, “Man! I can’t believe that it has been 3 years already!” Then I started to really think about everything I have done with the site within that time, more importantly, everything that I haven’t done. But, I have tried to not dwell on that which I haven’t done… at least not entirely.

I remember when I first had the idea to escape “The Photo Geeks Blog” and begin the journey of the Uncommon Geek. I was living in a one bedroom apartment with a blue bathroom, sleeping on a thin futon mattress. Man, I loved that apartment! The futon mattress was some of the best night sleeps I’ve ever had! In the summer it was just a tad too warm, and in the winter the temperature was always just right. I was struggling with the Photo Geeks Blog, trying to figure out how I can balance the photo side and geek side. But, The geek side of it started to take over, and I knew it was time to start a new project. (more…)

arcade

A new arcade opened up in one of our local malls a few weeks ago. Naturally, I was excited and skeptical at the same time as modern arcades have been lacking in appeal as far as what they call games goes. A co-worker told me about the above mentioned arcade and Mrs. Uncommon geek and I decided to check it out. We stayed maybe 10 minutes, and most of that time was spent trying to beat each others high scores on a free-to-play Pac-Man/Galaga emulator with terrible lag. I reported back to my co-worker and gave him my honest opinion about the place. He asked me if classic games are the only thing I look for in an arcade. That got me thinking…

What DO I look for in an arcade that makes me say, “Yes! This is an excellent arcade.” (more…)

level100geeklogo

When I realized that my humble site was close to its 100th post, I didn’t know what I wanted to write about. All I knew is that I wanted to be the one who posted it. but, a post is nothing without content. Would I have an image with text? Would it be an epic “OMG” type of post? Would it just be “Happy 100th post!” like Mrs. Uncommon Geek jokingly suggested?

Frak if I know! (more…)

confused-monkey

At the time of this post, I am in the middle of writing a review of the TV series “Farscape.” Whenever I sit down to write a review of something that I truly and honestly love and enjoy, I find it extremely difficult to focus my thoughts on the aspects of the thing that I like about what I’m wanting to review. I mean, what do I focus on? How do I focus on just that one thing long enough to talk about it for that paragraph or two? (more…)

GM: “So, what do you do? Do you take the short path full of monsters? Or, do you take the longer path through the mountains?

Me: “I take the long way around.”

GM: “Why would you do that? Their aren’t any monsters that way, plus it will take you and your party twice as long to get there?!”

Me: “It’s the safest route.”

GM: “But, you will miss the XP, which means you won’t level as quickly!”

Me: “But, that’s what my character would do; think of the safety of the party.”

GM: “Why are you being so weird?!”

Me: “I’m role playing my character. Isn’t that what you’re suppose to do?”

GM: “You don’t role play in an RPG! That’s just dumb!” (more…)
